“Turn your lights down low…….” This song by Bob Marley and Lauryn Hill is on repeat in my mind. Maybe because it is raining outside or because I just got home from mad traffic and I just want to wine down…. It’s a good vibes song, thank you so much Bob and Lauryn!!
Recently I have been listing down the things I have to do the next day whenever I end my day. This is not necessarily something I saw somewhere and decided to start, I just started it and it has been going on for a while. Working towards a goal literally means working towards a goal. It means the actual push ups and chin ups and all that are required to move forward in the goal you have made.
Let me tell you a story. There is a young man who is 26, let’s call him Key. Now Key has had the best life anyone would want. He had amazing parents who provided for him but made sure that he did not get spoilt. They made sure to keep him busy with reading books and watching television. He was a very bright boy all his life. Getting a job when he finally finished school came organically. Everyone was so happy and proud of him. He felt so good about his job. Trouble came when he had to go the extra mile. He openly refused to do the work and even refused to take part in team building activities. He did his work well enough and his work translated in revenue for the company as any post would. He did what was expected to do.
Many people came and left the company and he has remained at the same place. He had the same pay and the same position he was a few years ago. Everyone included him in new projects but up to a certain point. They did this because Key did what he was requested to do. He did not go the extra mile or even do his work thoroughly. Was he a bad person? No. He just did not have the concept of putting that extra effort into work.
Why did I start this discussion by sharing about how I list down what I do at the end of my days, well because I was like Key. Just satisfied in doing just the bare minimum to pass by to the next day. I’m here to tell you that makes some of us miserable, especially while working towards a specific target or goal. Whenever ever reach that target. It seemed to me like a moving point, yet I was the one who was not working towards it. It is necessary to stop all that, regardless of any other outside factors related to this.
Working hard, I have come to realise, means taking up what is our task and making it like our mission. Thinking of ways of making it better and performing it better. How can we make our job easier, Can we do more than we are doing? Hard work and clearing up what we need to do so as to push forward into better is something I am genuinely learning. Not being okay with the bare minimum. Wanting more, better and most of all adding value. Hard work leads to us being so tired that we barely can open our eyes but it also comes with a sense of “Yes! I did that! I can do that and much more!” And the thing is that we all have it within us.
Doing better and working better than yesterday improves us and helps our mind understand that where we are at this moment in time is not permanent and it could change at any time. It helps us grow and become better contributors to society. So let’s buckle and down and completely destroy our to-do lists. As we enter into bed, may we pass out in that sweet sweet sweet sleep and wear a smile of hope that we will do it better today than yesterday!
As always guys I wish you nothing but positive vibes love and light!! Thanks for reading and have a good one!
